Once Upon a Napkin

April 6, 2011

I’m reposting this blog from my friend Linda who is the founder of Affiliated Women Intl (AWI), which is Enriching Women Worldwide. I’m a member and co-Director of our local neighborhood networking group. The Tulsa AWI Neighborhood Gathering meets every 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at 11am at the Agora Coffee House. Check out the website at http://www.affiliatedwomen.net.

Strange title and funny thought.

Early a.m. I was thinking about some videos I watched on Sunday from a site entitled “The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur“.  The videos are quite informative and I was educated & impressed with the material. So as I thought about his clever title, I was reminded of how often great ideas start on something so simple as a NAPKIN!  Usually over a meal as two folks share ideas and one grabs a napkin and starts recording the brilliance.

I’ve been known to do the same.  In fact, I framed a NAPKIN from the oldest ristorante in Venice with the date 1600-something. I mean, that napkin tells me that a business has survived for nearly 400 years – same city; same location!

How many great ideas do you know that first found life on a NAPKIN?  I bet each of you have done the same – an idea is spawned over lunch or coffee and before you know it, the nearest napkin becomes the seed of greatness.

Great business doesn’t have to start with an awesome business plan unless one plans to seek financial support for the effort.  It doesn’t have to start with a full-blown strategic plan with all aspects perfectly in place. A NAPKIN will do.  All great ideas need is someone to record them, believe in them, nurture them and put forth the sweat equity it takes to make them happen!

In fact, I believe the best laid plans for any project begin on a NAPKIN.  There’s something about the simplicity of rapidly scribbling notes on a soft white piece of not-really-paper, that makes it seem much more realistic and feasible.  I recall stuffing a pile of napkins in my purse after a meal that turned into an awesome brainstorming session.  As I pulled them out upon returning home, I was impressed with how much a NAPKIN will hold of collective brainpower.

If you’re in business now or thinking seriously about entering the world of the entrepreneur; may I suggest you gather a group of bright folks about you over a meal.  Start sharing your thoughts and see what happens. . .

And make certain you have ample NAPKINS about you, for you may never have another opportunity to begin a remarkable journey with an incredible outcome as you do the day you begin with “once upon a NAPKIN”.

Then add a bit of BELIEF. Belief that you can do it! Belief that what sits on that napkin you pull from your purse is possible. Then sprinkle those thoughts with energy, creativity and determination.

I leave this post with words from the famed British tenor (and my favorite), Russell Watson from a recent newspaper interview:

“The most important thing in life is self-belief. You have to believe in yourself and be convinced you can achieve the very best you’re capable of. Everyone is surrounded by people trying to pull them down, but the test of a man is his self-belief.” I might add the “test of a woman is her self-belief!

And plenty of NAPKINS!

Warmly,

Linda

Share with us below some of the great ideas that you have put on a napkin.

About Linda: I’m a ‘vintage woman’ traveling well into the 2nd half of the journey. My background is in counseling education & organizational development. Most of the work I’ve done over the years has been in O.D. – program & project development & management, including fund-raising as a development officer & a consultant. For a few years, after moving back to home territory to be close to daughters and adorable g’children, I engaged in private practice professional therapeutic intervention. I gave that up after only a few years & now consider myself to be a “recovering professional therapist!” Quite frankly, coaching & mentoring are a whole lot more fun & less stressful as well!

Fear – Taking a Step Back

March 9, 2011
Curveball

I’ve been incognito for a few weeks due to life throwing out a few curve balls so I needed to take a step back, reevaluate my business and remember why I do what I do.

During this time I realize how fragile life can truly be. I got a call about a very good friend of mine a couple of weeks ago to tell me that they where in the hospital and that things had turned for the worst after they went in for a simple procedure. Then I received another call telling me that one of my aunts was in the hospital having her on battle going on.  With their lives hanging in the balance, one of the things I was reminded of was how so many of us live our lives in misery on jobs that we dislike/hate. You allow yourself to stay in this state due to many reasons and one of those reasons is FEAR! Fear of staying where we are, Fear of going forward, Fearful to take a chance, Fearful to step out of your comfort zone and start working at what you love. You have all these passions and dreams locked inside, but allow “FEAR” to paralyze you into not moving at all and staying right where you are. How sad. You would whether stay locked  into jobs you dislike/hate and not take a chance of living the life you love and desire. Because, you are more comfortable in the prison you have set up for yourself you choose  to not move at all! Again, how sad.

Yes it is possible even in this economy to finally take the necessary step(s) you need to work at what you love. I watched an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America with the First Lady – Michelle Obama and one of the questions she was asked is what should a person do that can’t find a job in this economy? My answer to that is CREATE and START your own business. There are many businesses out there, that don’t cost you an arm and a leg and that you could start and would love doing.

Here are a few websites to checkout in finding a home based business that might be of interest to you: http://www.cooljobs.com, http://www.backdoorjobs.com, http://www.fabjob.com

Don’t wait until a tragedy strike your life and/or you find yourself in a hospital bed wondering why didn’t I do “you fill in the blank”  sooner or be one of those people who allowed the dash between your birth and death be filled with regrets because you were “FEARFUL” to step out of your comfort zone! Use that FEAR to move you toward taking the necessary steps to achieve your dream(s)

My friend and aunt are both doing better, but they still have some recovery work ahead of them!!

LET IT GO!!!!

January 2, 2011

LET IT GO!!!!

The first time I ever remember receiving this was back in 1987 and I think it’s still as relevant today as it was then. I’m not sure who the author of this is, but I think Bishop T.D. Jakes.  I want to share it with you, especially as we start this New Year it’s time to let a lot of things go and begin this Year off different from one you’ve done in the pervious years. If you want to take your life and business to the next level this year, then you need to LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to somethings that doesn’t belong to you an it was never intended for your life, then you need to….LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to past hurts and pains….LET IT GO!!!

If someone can’t treat you right, love you back and see your worth….LET IT GO!!!

If someone has angered you….LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to some thought of evil and revenge….LET IT GO!!!

If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction….LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to a job that longer meets your needs or talents….LET IT GO!!!

If you have a bad attitude….LET IT GO!!!

It you keep judging others to make yourself feel better….LET IT GO!!!

If you’re stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level in Him….LET IT GO!!!

If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship….LET IT GO!!!

If you keep trying to help someone who won’t even try to help themselves….LET IT GO!!!!

If you’re feeling depressed and stressed….LET IT GO!!!

If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying “take your hands off of it”, then you need to….LET IT GO!!!

Let the past be the past….Forget the former things….GOD is doing a new thing!….LET IT GO in 2011!!!

Get Right or Get Left…think about it!

It’s A New Year

January 1, 2011
The New Year Countdown. Venue: Marina Bay, Sin...

Almost every one is making some sort of New Year’s resolution and for most of us we might make it through the first 31 days of the year and then it’s back to the same ole same ole. I would like to encourage you this year not to allow your dreams, plans, passion and desires to go to waste too quickly.

I want you to remember upfront, that as soon as you make your resolution that you’re going to encounter some bumps, some slow downs, some frustrations, some people who don’t want to see you succeed (haters/those that don’t have dreams of their own), and last but not least, your own worst enemy – You.  You’re going to find out that you will get in your own way more than you thought. As much as you don’t want to admit it, you’re going to find yourself self-sabotaging your own plans, passion, and dreams for various reasons. My encouragement to you when this happens, is to take a step back, a deep breath, and remind yourself why you allowed yourself to set the New Year’s resolution(s) in the first place.

My goals this year are to spend more time with God through prayer and meditation, to love my husband more deeply, to give more than I gave last year to those charities that are important and are of interest to me, add more time for nurturing and growing my business (by investing more in me, my training, and learning), to read more, to play more, and last but not least to love and be proud of the achievement I’m accomplishing more. Like you, I’m going to have to take a step back, a deep breath, and remind myself why I allowed myself to set these goals for the New Year, because I’m aware that I’m going to hit a few of those bumps, hurdles, frustrations, people who don’t want to see me succeed, and last but not least, I’m going to experience my own self-sabotaging :). BUT in the end I will Give myself the Power to succeed, survive and become a better me in 2011!

So what are your goals for this year? Post your response below.

Don’t allow your dreams to go down the drain…they add to the joy of living!!!!

Believe

December 29, 2010
BELIEVE

Before this year ends I want to urge you to truly believe in what the New Year has to offer. Not only do I want you to believe I want you to be ready to take action!

The following is an excerpt from Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach

First we have to believe, and then we believe. ~G. C. Lightenberg

As the season of Believing seems to wind down for the rest of the world, please let me gently make something very clear. Many dreams still wait in the wings. Many aspirations are just within our grasp if we keep stretching. Many hungers need nourishment. Many yearnings must be acknowledged so that they can be fulfilled. Many authentic sparks must be fanned before Passion performs her perfect work in you. Throw another log on the fire.
This is not the day you quit.
This is not the day you cry.
This is the day you stare down every naysayer in your life who doesn’t get it yet. Because You do. Finally. And now you know that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

This is the day you shout, “I Believe!” Keep on shouting it until you’re hoarse. No more muttering under your breath.

So keep on believing that you have the passion, intelligence, brilliance, creativity, wisdom, clarity, depth, and savvy to find that quiet center of solace, serenity, and strength necessary to create and sustain an authentic life. Every day is the prayer. An authentic life is the most person form of worship. When you start believing, you’ll discover that all things are really possible.

Never throw out Anyone, including Yourself!

December 15, 2010

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone. ~ Audrey Hepburn

I want to add to the end of Miss Hepburn’s quote, including yourself. When we are in that limbo stage of staying where we are or taking that step forward into the unknown we tend to forget about ourselves and only think about everything and everyone else. When you start your new business or you’re looking for ways to increase your client base don’t forget that you also have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; so never throw “yourself” out, by putting yourself on the back burner. Take care of yourself as you’re putting in those long hours of building your business, getting ready for the holidays and all that that brings into your life! There’s a Haitian Proverb that says “Beyond the mountains there are mountains again,” so you have to continue through the process by taking a step back, breath, look at the progress you’ve already accomplished, the goals you’ve already achieved, and pat yourself on the back for a job well done so far. If you burned out then you will not be any good to your clients, your business, your family, or yourself, and those mountains that won’t go away will seem too hard to climb so you will hit that proverbial wall and do nothing.

Coming next month I’ll be doing a series on success you don’t want to miss your copy of Give Yourself Power blog so make sure you subscribe to my blog to automatic get your copy!

Do You Know Your Own STRENGTH?

December 1, 2010
Whitney Houston - Central Park, NYC Septembe...

As Whitney Houston made her come back last year one of the songs on her new album is called – I Didn’t Know My Own Strength. As I was listening and reading these words, I realized that there have been times, even now, that I don’t know my own STRENGTH. As I recognized this I also realized if I don’t always know my own STRENGTH, then, that means some of my own readers don’t know their own STRENGTH either!

Not just in life, but in business also, we are a strong and resilient people! Strong means – able to bear or endure, able to withstand stress or violence: not easily broken or injured, having or exhibiting moral or intellectual force, endurance, or vigor, and effective or efficient especially in a particular direction: able to accomplish a result. Resilient means – to jump back, rebound, capable of withstanding shock without permanent deformation or rupture, moving swiftly back, and tending to regain strength or high spirits after weakness or depression.

You can carry out whatever it is you set your mind to if you can just recognize your own STRENGTH, take that all important first step and action, and not allow yourself to lose sight of your passion and dreams. Every time I acknowledge, accept, and believe in my own STRENGTH I accomplish more than I thought I ever could. You can too. God gives us all that we need to move forward, make great and powerful things happen if we just believe in “ALL” that He has given us within!

I’m not saying that the road will always be easy, but I am saying that if you fall you can get back up and start again. As Whitney says in her song “I’m was not built to break”  and neither or you! Enjoy her video from YouTube – Whitney Houston – I Didn’t Know My Own Strength and allow the words to truly sink into you and your spirit and see what you’ll be able to do before the end of this year and in next year, both in your business and personally! I challenge you to just take that first step towards your goals, dreams, and passion – Do it for you, you deserve it.
